Jerry Carruth with Mark Wallace after the first interview of the day on July 26, 2014.

We have added a new way to help us out. We need to know who you are if you are interested in helping complete this project.

In many ways, we’ve already succeeded in capturing many of the stories surrounding key moments that were special to Coach Max Goldsmith and those who ran under him as athletes. However, weaving together these various threads of the overall story is far from finished. We have more to document. We have more research to do. We will ultimately produce a program that will hopefully honor all of those involved.

If you are interested in seeing this happen, PLEASE COMPLETE THE SUPPORT FORM found on this web site. It is under the menu option of CONTRIBUTE or you can CLICK HERE to get to the form.

Thank you.

Andrews’ First State Champ

BILLY SPEAR – 1952BillySpear 1952

With all the superb track teams that came out of Andrews, it sometimes gets overlooked that our first individual State Champion was Billy Spear.

Billy won the high hurdles in 15 flat in 1952 in Austin to bring home the gold.

THE FLYING A

FlyAArticle_picAccording to Max, the famous Flying A shirts donned by his tracksters got its start when Elaine Goldsmith started making shirts for youngsters who participated in Max’s summer track program. These shirts were cherished by most youngsters who wanted to some day run track for Max Goldsmith. The first time I saw the Andrews “Flying A” was in 1958. I saw Andrews dominate the Cowtown Relays in Ft. Worth, Texas. It seemed each time awards were given out, one or more Flying A was on the winner stand. Those shirts alone probably intimidated some opponents.

Forest Scott Interview Scheduled

Educator, athlete and coach Forest Scott worked with and for Max while in Andrews. Max attributed the ability of many of his runners to the excellent coaching of Forest in Junior High in Andrews. Forest has key insights regarding the focus of this project and we have finally been able to schedule a interview with him in Lubbock. If all goes well, producer Matt Wallace will be capturing video of Forest telling his story to Mark Wallace on July 1, 2013.

Audio Interviews with Max

Mark and Jan Wallace spent the morning with a microphone, a recorder and Max Goldsmith. They captured some stories and discussed the project. Max was not feeling as strong as he would like, but he’s encouraged that we are moving forward on this documentary.
